UNESCO Call – World Heritage Volunteers 2017

Recruitment of (call for) volunteers for the project

“WHV – International tourist assistance, promotion and accessible tourism monitoring”

This is the tenth edition of the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) campaign “Heritage in our

Hands”, promoted by the UNESCO World Heritage Center in the framework of the World Heritage

Education Programme. The WHV initiative was launched in 2008 to encourage young volunteers to

take concrete action and to play an active role in the protection, preservation and promotion of

the world heritage. The initiative consists of field activities organized by youth organizations or

institutions in collaboration with different stakeholders and partners, working together to

maintain an excellent state of conservation of the World Heritage property.

The initiative mobilizes national and international volunteers through both practical and

participatory field activities and to raise awareness about the preservation of the world cultural

and natural heritage.

In 2017, 50 projects were selected to be implemented in different parts of the world, including 13

in Europe, among them UNESCO also selected the project submitted by the UNESCO Sicily

Heritage Foundation which supports as operational structure the management of the UNESCO

serial property “Arab-Norman Palermo and cathedrals of Monreale and Cefalù”’.

promotion and accessible tourism monitoring”, will be implemented in Palermo and Cefalù, from

technical partners: the City of Palermo, the City of Cefalù, the University of Palermo and ERSU

(Regional institution for the Study Right), the OTIE (Tourism Observatory of European Islands).
